Knoxville mayor asks for regulations on data centers

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The City of Knoxville is planning to pause the construction of all new major data centers for a year while city staff talks over possible permanent guidelines outlining where and how Knoxville data centers operate.

A letter from Mayor Indya Kincannon, released by the city Monday, said the mayor had asked the Knoxville – Knox County Planning staff to research best practices for data centers.

“More specifically, I seek recommendations for a potential ordinance to provide guardrails for the site selection and operational requirements of data centers within the City,” the letter says. “Residents, elected officials, staff and I have concerns about the potential impacts of large data centers on immediate neighbors and the broader community.”…
