Eight local weather-related deaths detailed by Knox County Regional Forensic Center

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) —The total number of weather-related fatalities in Tennessee rose to 34 on Monday , including a dozen in East Tennessee.

The latest figure from the Tennessee Department of Health includes seven deaths in Knox County, two in Roane County, two in Washington County and one in Anderson County.

Shelby County has reported 11 weather-related fatalities, the most of any Tennessee county. Only Shelby and Knox Counties have reported more than two so far.

While the official causes of death could take months to be finalized, Knox County Regional Forensic Center Director Chris Thomas released some information on eight area deaths.

Two of the deaths were motor vehicle crashes believed to have been caused by roadway conditions. Six others list hypothermia as a contributing factor, though Thomas said the deaths may have secondary factors.

Additionally, hypothermia may be a secondary factor to causes not yet determined.
