Tennessee authorities have identified the killer of an off-duty police officer in a long-unsolved cold case.
Knoxville police announced Tuesday that Knoxville Officer Tony Williams’s killer was identified as Johnny Edgar Warwick, who is deceased. Williams was fatally shot on July 7, 1989, while riding his motorcycle off duty on Cherry Street near Interstate 40.
Williams was 24 years old when he died.
Warwick, who a Knox County Grand Jury posthumously charged with first-degree murder, died on Nov. 1, police said.
Williams’ case remained dormant for years until Homicide Unit Sgt. Rodney Patton reignited the investigation about five years ago. He worked with Detective Brandon Stryker and retired FBI Special Agent Paul Hughes to uncover the officer’s killer.
Knoxville police in September closed parts of I-40 to complete a FARO forensic scan of the area, WBIR-TV reported. The 3D scans help capture accurate measurements of an area.
