KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — After the recent winter weather kept many packages and mail from arriving at doorsteps, UPS workers have been feeling the pressure as they navigate an unprecedented backlog.
“Our guys and gals don’t know, so they became a punching bag,” said Teamsters Local 519 president Wes Trotterchaud.
He said his UPS teamsters were met with backlash from customers voicing their frustrations about delayed mail, a problem local delivery drivers can’t control.
“So it got to the point where I was concerned for the wellbeing of our members,” he said.

According to Trotterchaud, the problem was customers didn’t have anyone to talk to regarding questions on delivery because automated systems made it difficult to speak to real people working in the Knoxville area. So, delivery drivers and others felt the brunt of their frustrations.
“90%-95% of the customers have been outstanding, they’ve been understanding, but there’s been 5-10% that just ain’t been nice,” said Trotterchaud.
