Judge asked to reconsider brother’s bond as manhunt continues for Kenneth Wayne DeHart Jr.

A Maryville man said through his attorney Monday that he did not help his brother, Kenneth Wayne DeHart Jr. of Alcoa, avoid capture after allegedly shooting two Blount County Sheriff’s deputies last week.

Marcus Erving DeHart, 41, is accused of accessory after the fact in connection with the alleged murder of Deputy Greg McCowan and alleged attempted murder of Deputy Shelby Eggers. Marcus DeHart’s attorney asked the court to reconsider his $1 million bond during a short hearing Monday afternoon. DeHart himself did not speak during the hearing, which was crowded with members of the media.

DeHart’s attorney emphasized that the Maryville man has not been convicted of a crime and characterized his bond as “excessive.” Blount County District Attorney General Ryan Desmond opposed the move to lower the bond, and Blount County General Sessions Judge William Brewer will take up Marcus DeHart’s bond amount next at a hearing Thursday.

Kenneth Wayne DeHart Jr,. 42, is charged with shooting McCowan and Eggers during a traffic stop Thursday night, Feb. 8. He’s the subject of one of the largest manhunts in Blount County history.
