KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — On Wednesday, Governor Bill Lee went to social media to announce that the flags flying over the state capitol have been lowered to half-staff in honor of Greg McCowan , the Blount County Deputy who was fatally shot while on duty.
A memorial service is scheduled for February 14 at 1 p.m. at Sevier Heights Baptist Church at 3140 Maloney Road. A funeral procession will follow the service to Grandview Cemetery, 2304 Tuckaleechee Pike in Maryville.

“All around great guy, he loved his family, loved his friends, loved his coworkers, loved the job that he did, and you know he didn’t half it, he went full into it,” said Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper Evan Lane.
Lane and McCowan, among other first responders, helped save a man’s life from a burning vehicle in 2021. Because of their bravery, McCowan and the others were rewarded with the Sherriff Office Lifesaving Award, and McCowan received the Law Enforcement Commendation for his service.
