Welcome to Your Week in Knoxville, emailed every Sunday only to subscribers, from Knox News editor Joel Christopher. A selection of our best pieces from this past week are featured at the bottom of this newsletter.
The news business is always busy, but this past week stands out for the volume and importance of the events we covered.
We started the week with a coverage team in Greeneville for a hearing in federal court to learn whether Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti could prevail in his bid to get a preliminary injunction against the NCAA to prevent the college sports governing body from enforcing its rules on name, image and likeness deals signed by student-athletes.
We ended the week with a different coverage team back in Maryville for the third time in days, this time to hear from Blount County Sheriff James Berrong, who released the police bodycam and dashcam video of the fatal shooting of Deputy Greg McCowan (and vowed that he’d never watch it again after the press conference). Our hearts are with the family, friends and colleagues of McCowan, who was relatively new to policing after a midlife career change.
