McGhee Tyson Airport to break ground on new parking garage in November

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — McGhee Tyson Airport is planning to break ground on a new parking garage in November after a months-long delay.

The airport is in the process of expanding its parking to accommodate the increasing number of travelers going through McGhee Tyson as the East Tennessee region grows . The new six-story, long-term parking lot will offer 3,500 spaces next to the airport terminal building.

It was expected to be finished in 2026, however, it is unclear how the delay will impact the length of the project.

Construction was set to begin in June, however, the airport said the groundbreaking was delayed to accommodate the high demand for passenger parking during the peak summer and fall travel seasons. In February, a portion of McGhee Tyson’s Long-Term Parking lot was closed for the expansion project. According to the airport’s website, Economy Lot D & E are closed.

The parking expansion is the first of many construction projects aimed at accommodating the airport’s growth . The addition of six new gates to the concourse is in the planning phases. This project has a target completion date of 2028.
