Tennessee battling a former Vols assistant coach for an elite 5-star recruit

The Tennessee Vols are reportedly one of the early favorites for an elite 2027 five-star recruit from Texas.

According to Rivals.com’s Adam Gorney , Tennessee is the program that’s the “most interested” in 2027 five-star athlete Myson Johnson-Cook.

“When it comes to recruiting, Tennessee has been the most interested in Johnson-Cook so far and the DeSoto, Texas athlete has definitely taken notice of the Volunteers early on,” wrote Gorney this week.

Johnson-Cook, 6-foot-3/203 lbs from DeSoto, TX, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 athlete in the nation and the No. 2 player in the state of Texas. He’s also rated as the No. 11 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.

The Texas A&M Aggies appear to be the Vols’ biggest competition early in this recruiting battle. According to Gorney, that’s in large part because of Aggies running backs coach Trooper Taylor, who happens to be a former Tennessee assistant coach (Taylor coached running backs/wide receivers at Tennessee from 2004 to 2007).
