East Tennessee school closures: Which districts closed due to severe weather on Thursday

Category 2 Hurricane Helene is beginning to haven an impact in East Tennessee . The result? Several local school districts are closing due to the possibility of severe weather.

In anticipation of heavy rainfall and gusty winds, at least one school already has announced closures for Sept. 27.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Knox County and other parts of Eastern Tennessee, effective the afternoon of Sept. 26, and a high wind watch will be in place until the evening of Sept. 27. The severe weather has prompted concerns about deteriorating road conditions from flash flooding, as well as fallen trees and power lines.

  • Sevier County School System is closed on Sept. 26.
  • Union County Public Schools has canceled all after-school activities and games on Sept. 26.
  • Grainger County will dismiss students early due to weather at 1 p.m.
  • Cocke County Schools will dismiss students at 1:30 p.m.
