OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WATE) — More affordable housing is coming to Oak Ridge after the City approved a plan for their housing authority to move forward on financing a multimillion-dollar project.
“Oak Ridge is not immune to the affordable housing crisis that we’re seeing all across the country,” said Oak Ridge Housing Authority executive director, Maria Catron.

The Oak Ridge Housing Authority plans to build 104 rental units in the Scarboro community in one of the largest overhauls and additions to public affordable housing in the city.
“This is really the first substantial development of, at in any time from, affordable housing in Oak Ridge since its inception, which is huge,” said Catron.
Behind the Scarboro Community Center lies 11 acres of land the City has transferred to the housing authority to develop, including 10 more single family homes.
“There are many needs across all of our communities, but in Oak Ridge, we are always looking for ways to make sure that we have equal opportunity for our residents, low-income housing is part of what we have to take care of,” said City Council member, Chuck Hope.
