The Tennessee Vols remained at No. 7 in the AP Top 25 poll after being idle this past weekend.
That’s a fair ranking for the Vols, though for now it’s hard to know where anyone should actually be ranked thanks to some unexpected results through the first two months of the season.
Two AP Top 25 voters — Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News and Derek Redd of The Intelligencer — have the Vols at No. 5 on their ballot.
That’s in stark contrast to New Jersey Advanced Media’s Brian Fonseca, who has Tennessee ranked lower than anyone else.
Fonseca has the Vols at No. 18 on his ballot.
Fonseca must have weird bias against Tennessee. I mean, he has Texas at No. 4, despite the fact that the Longhorns’ best win this season is against Michigan, a team that Fonseca didn’t include his top 25.
Tennessee’s best win, meanwhile, is against Alabama, a team that Fonseca has ranked No. 19.
If Texas and Tennessee have similar records, but the Vols have the better win, how in the world can Fonseca have the two programs ranked so far apart? There’s no logical reason.
