Former Vols QB Heath Shuler is a big fan of one of Tennessee’s transfer portal additions

Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Heath Shuler is a big fan of one of UT’s offseason transfer portal additions.

And it’s not a player on the offensive side of the ball.

Shuler joined WNML’s SportsTalk on Monday and he had plenty of great things to say about Vols cornerback Jermod McCoy, who transferred to Tennessee from Oregon State after the 2023 season.

“I remember early on, Navy (Shuler, Heath’s son) telling me ‘dad, you gotta see this corner that we have’,” said Shuler. “He said ‘he can lock down anyone, he is exciting and he is really challenging to throw against’. So I think he’s one of probably — the way he’s playing — he’s one of the best corners that we’ve had in a very, very long time. He reminds me of that kind of Dale Carter, lock ’em down and being able to just really defend your best receiver.

“Often time it allows us to play more aggressively defensively. Because we know that we have a secondary now that during one-on-ones are not going to allow these guys to be wide open downfield like we’ve seen in years past. This is a really good secondary. McCoy has done a tremendous job of helping to lead the way on that. So it gives us a lot more opportunities to play different defenses based on his performance itself.”
