NITRO, WV (WOWK) – The day Hurricane Helene made landfall is a day marked into history for thousands of Americans.
225 lives were lost, and thousands of others are still desperately trying to recover, that’s why Abbott’s wrecking service and Holley Memorial Baptist Church are teaming up to help.
“I guess you could put yourself into that position. You never know,” Eugene Mallory, Owner of Abbott’s Wrecking Service, said.
They plan to fill a tractor-trailer with supplies like non-perishable food and personal hygiene items and take it down to Townsend Tennessee.
“And we’ve got probably half a trailer. We’d like to fill it up and maybe take it this week if we could get some more donations from people,” Mallory said.
When they are unable to travel further into Tennessee because of road damage, a Townsend-area church will help them deliver materials to residents using horses and pack mules.
“It’s a tragedy that this thing is like it is. These people don’t have anything, nothing. So my theory is, what are we going to do?” Rick Edwards, Deacon at Holly Memorial Baptist Church, said.
