Oak Ridge may soon purchase land for new animal shelter

Oak Ridge may soon have a site for a new animal shelter .

Oak Ridge City Council on Monday night approved a resolution giving City Manager Randy Hemann permission to offer a price of to $200,000 on 2.52 acres of property at the corner of Fairbanks Road and the Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Capt. Matthew Tedford of the Oak Ridge Police Department, which oversees the shelter, indicated the land owned by R&R Properties is located behind the parking lot of Rapiscan Systems/AS&E, 601 Oak Ridge Turnpike, previously called NucSafe. According to its website, the company is involved in radiation monitoring and nuclear materials detection technologies.

The resolution states the location is more visible than the current shelter at 395 Belgrade Road, which would be beneficial to the shelter. It says the city and officials with R&R Properties, owned by former city council member Rick Chinn and his family, have verbally agreed on a price of $200,000. Approval of the resolution will allow Hemann to submit a formal offer.
