A former Blount County Schools teacher who recently resigned amid allegations of “inappropriate illicit communication” was arrested in Southern Georgia on Tuesday, Nov. 12 following a “months’-long investigation” by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.
Former Heritage High School track coach and science instructor Shane Howard Rewis, 51, Maryville was indicted earlier this month on charges of trafficking for a commercial sex act, sexual exploitation of a minor, two counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child and three counts of exploitation of a minor by electronic means, according to an official BCSO statement.
Rewis is being held in custody in Seminole County, Georgia, pending extradition. BCSO spokesperson Marian O’Briant said it, “could be weeks before Mr. Rewis is transferred back to Blount County,” and that due to the investigation being ongoing, she couldn’t release any additional information at this time.
As of Wednesday, Nov. 13, Rewis’ professional 10-year teaching licensure remains active according to the Tennessee Department of Education’s Public License View. He is the second BCS teacher in recent months to be accused of inappropriate conduct with his students.
