Maryville man charged after Jan. 6 found guilty on 11 charges

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — An East Tennessee man who FBI investigators say was one of the first people to enter the U.S. Capitol on January 6 was found guilty on several charges according to court documents.

Edward Kelley was found guilty of 11 charges following a two-day bench trial beginning on Oct. 28, and ending Oct. 29, 2024. He was found not guilty of obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting the same.

The charges include:

  • Obstructing Officers During a Civil Disorder
  • Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Certain Officers
  • Destruction of Government Property Causing Damage in an Amount Exceeding $1,000
  • Destruction of Government Property Causing Damage in an Amount Less Than $1,000
  • Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds
  • Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds
  • Engaging in Physical Violence in a Restricted Building or Grounds
  • Entering and Remaining in the Gallery of a House of Congress
  • Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building
  • Act of Physical Violence in the Capitol Grounds or Buildings
  • Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building
