TBI investigating after man shot at by law enforcement during pursuit

ANDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Anderson County that happened on Friday.

The TBI shared that just after 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, a Campbell County Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated a traffic stop in Caryville. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he saw a man armed with a gun. The TBI said the man then sped away and a pursuit began. The Jacksboro and Rocky Top Police Departments then joined the chase.

The driver went onto Interstate 75 Southbound and into Anderson County, according to a release from the TBI. At mile marker 127, the driver pulled over and exited the vehicle. During this encounter, the TBI said shots were fired by a Campbell County deputy, the Jacksboro officer, and the Rocky Top officer for reasons still under investigation.

The man then got back in his vehicle and left the scene despite being shot, according to the TBI. The chase ended when an Anderson County deputy hit and forcibly stopped the subject’s vehicle. The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
