Davidson County Sheriff shares religious head covering policy in lawsuit against Knox County

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Davidson County sheriff provided a declaration in a federal lawsuit about his department’s policy surrounding arrestees who wear religious head coverings.

Layla Soliz, who practices Islam, is suing Knox County and the sheriff because she said a sheriff’s office employee illegally and improperly posted a mugshot of her without her hijab on the county’s public website.

In a court filing made Tuesday, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall laid out his department’s policy about religious head coverings, saying in part, “religious arrestees who wear religious headwear-including religious arrestees who wear a hijab-generally are not required to remove their religious headwear for booking photographs.”…
