East Tennesseans gather for Workers Memorial Day event honoring workers who died in 2024

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Several people gathered in Knoxville over the weekend for an event honoring fallen East Tennessee workers.

The event was held Saturday afternoon in West Knoxville as part of International Workers’ Memorial Day – an annual observance on April 28 that honors workers who lost their lives due to workplace accidents or exposure-related illnesses.

At the memorial, the names of East Tennessee workers who died in 2024 were read aloud. Among the names mentioned on that list were five workers from Impact Plastics, who were swept away and killed by catastrophic flash flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Helene in September. Others included three workers who helped clean up one of the worst man-made disasters in U.S. history — the Kingston coal ash spill at Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston plant…
