Case of West Nile virus reported in Knox County

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — There are three reported cases of West Nile virus in Tennessee, including one in Knox County, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Knox County has one reported human infection of West Nile virus as of June 3, the CDC said. Shelby and Carroll Counties in West Tennessee also have cases reported. In total, there are 10 cases of West Nile virus in humans across seven states. See the map of cases on the CDC’s website.

West Nile virus usually spreads through infected mosquitoes, the CDC said. It can cause a fever or other symptoms. However, most people who get the disease don’t have symptoms, an epidemiologist told 6 News.

“About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms,” the CDC wrote. “About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.”…
