Knoxville Braces for Sweltering Heat and Potential Severe Storms, NWS Cautions on Damaging Winds and Flash Flood Risks

Residents of Knoxville and surrounding areas should keep an eye to the sky this week as the National Weather Service has forecasted a mix of hot, sunny conditions punctuated by scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which have the potential to escalate to severe weather with damaging winds and the risk for flash flooding. The NWS predicted a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms later this afternoon with heat index values reaching a sweltering 98 degrees.

Starting tonight through Tuesday, the pattern of unsettled weather continues, a calm wind won’t do much to alleviate the high humidity and temperatures peeking near 90 each day, the threat for severe storms casts a shadow over the region as NWS notes in their detailed forecast, “Isolated strong to severe storms are possible, with the main hazards being damaging winds and localized flash flooding.”

As we move towards Independence Day, the volatile weather cocktail simmers down a bit although with a persistent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the forecast for the 4th itself currently holding a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms while remaining sunny and hot with temperatures expected to push into the low 90s, indicating no total reprieve from the muggy summer heat or potential precipitation…
