Internet cable left unburied for months in Blount County subdivision

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — People living in a Blount County community are concerned about an exposed cable wire that runs for hundreds of feet down the main drive of their neighborhood. The wire was cut in August 2024.

Have you ever tripped over an exposed cable outside your home? It’s not just a tripping hazard; it’s a serious safety risk. Covering exposed cables is important for more than just looks. They pose real threats like electrical shocks, potential fires, and expensive repairs if left unaddressed, and that’s what worries residents in a Blount County neighborhood.

As Cathy Sweeney and Vivian Peterson walk down the entrance road to their subdivision, they’re concerned about an exposed internet cable that was never buried. While a home was being built last year, a construction crew accidentally cut the cable internet connection provided by Comcast Xfinity.

While the cable service has been restored, the wire remains above the ground. You can see where the cable was reconnected last summer. The far end is connected to this junction box – that’s Cathy’s house in the upper right of your screen. The cable runs alongside the road for about 300 feet, which is the length of a football field.

Sweeney depends on a dependable computer connection. Both she and her husband work from home. Their cable service with Xfinity does work, but they also pay for Star Link satellite service to be on the safe side in case the exposed cable line from Xfinity is accidentally sliced again…
