KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — During this heatwave, people are being urged to limit time outdoors. For many workers, that’s just not an option. On Monday, 6 News looked at what these dangerous conditions mean for first responders and construction crews who can’t avoid the heat.
When temperatures climb, so do the health risks. For many outdoor workers, braving this kind of heat is all part of the job. Construction crews are out remodeling a house, but on Monday, it’s hotter than average.

“It’s horrible, it’s suffocating. The heat is suffocating, and we put a couple of little window units in, but once you start tearing out floors and walls, ceilings, the ACs aren’t helping,” explained Project Manager for Unique Construction, Brandy Owenby. “So, you can take turns standing in front of one for a couple of minutes or try to get a fan. But it’s just it’s so hot that it’s still it’s hard to breathe.”
