Extreme heat in East Tennessee poses risks to senior population

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Amid extreme heat in East Tennessee, health officials and senior living facilities are working to protect the elderly population.

According to the Knox County Health Department, people over 65 are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because their bodies don’t adjust as well to sudden temperature changes.

The Pointe at Lifespring Senior Living residents love to spend time outside, but during extreme heat, the facility is taking extra measures to protect them.

“We have different hydration stations posted up around the community at different exit doors leading out into the patio area,” Chelsea Irwin, Director of Sales for the facility, said. “We continuously do checks on them if they are outside to make sure that no one is outside for too long, and then we have also altered some of our programming.”…
