Detectives to re-review 1981 case of body found in Fort Loudoun Lake weighed down with cinderblocks

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Knoxville Police detectives will soon review a list of unsolved cases, including a case involving a woman whose body was found, weighed down by cinderblock pieces in Fort Loudoun Lake more than 40 years ago.

On September 26, 1981, a fisherman found the body of a woman floating in Fort Loudoun Lake, according to KPD’s unsolved murders case list. The body was identified as Katherine Lela Mae Ewing, 37.

Knoxville police noted that her body was weighed down with pieces of cinderblocks, and she had several cuts on her body. An autopsy determined that Ewing’s cause of death was drowning. It was estimated that when she was found, she had been in the water for approximately five days.

Ewing’s case is one among a list of cold cases that detectives with the Knoxville Police Department’s Homicide Unit will re-review soon, KPD spokesperson Scott Erland shared. He explained that the review process was an important component of establishing the standalone unit in early 2023…
