Growing East Tennessee battery industry faces hurdles with new tax credit rules

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The tech sector is continuing to grow in East Tennessee, specifically with battery development and manufacturing. But with the recent passing of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,”  new rules for federal tax credits could impact some of this growth.

According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, federal energy tax credits have helped create over 6,000 jobs in Tennessee since 2022.

According to a local battery development company, Eonix, the Southeastern United States has seen a boom in lithium-ion batteries, called the “Battery Belt,” creating more jobs in the area and bringing more advanced manufacturing.

“There’s just this massive ecosystem that’s building in the Southeast, for lithium-ion battery manufacturing,” said the CEO and Co-founder, Don DeRosa. “So that’s great, and then Knoxville specifically just has a really strong ecosystem for science and deep tech.”…
