Father and son help direct traffic following dangerous rockslide in Gatlinburg

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — Over the weekend, a dangerous rockslide wiped out part of Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains. 6 news found out how a brave father and son stepped in that night, making sure no one got hurt.

The Tennessee side of Newfound Gap Road is still closed due to a rockslide that happened late on Friday, shortly after Seth Shuler came across the damage and quickly jumped into action. He was heading home to North Carolina after a fly-fishing trip when he passed mile marker 12 and noticed something wasn’t right.

“I come around the corner right there because it’s a right bearing corner,” explained Seth. “Come around the corner and notice the whole shoulder was gone. There’s no grass, no trees, no nothing that’s actually supposed to be there. It’s just a hole, a total darkness. So, I kept going. I noticed the road had kind of started to slide off at that point, but I wasn’t sure if it’s for sure what I had saw.”…
