East Tennessee families share voucher application process as state says almost all families have been notified

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — As families in Tennessee head back to school for the first year of the expanded universal school voucher program, the state Department of Education said they are nearing the end of notifying 20,000 students who received the scholarship.

“We are now in the final stages of awarding the remaining scholarships to applicants on the waitlist,” Maggie Hannan, Director of Communications for the Tennessee Department of Education, said in a statement. “All 20,000 available scholarships will be awarded for the 2025-26 school year.”

WBIR has made several requests for an interview with the TDOE regarding the application process, selection process, and the waitlist process. We have not heard back about an interview, but the state did say they will share more about the process at a later date…
