At times, the path of instant stardom is not that easy. That’s what George MacIntyre probably feels. The freshman quarterback arrived in Knoxville with plenty of hype, but the starting job looks out of reach this fall.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, MacIntyre, a true freshman, has been running with the Tennessee Volunteers’ third-team offense during fall camp. The real battle is shaping up between senior Joey Aguilar and redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger. Aguilar brings 24 starts from the Appalachian State Mountaineers and a solid grasp of the offense. Merklinger already has a year in the program. That experience matters, and it’s showing.
Head coach Josh Heupel hasn’t named a starter yet, but his comments suggest MacIntyre has ground to make up. “All three of those guys have shown some really good characteristics,” Heupel said after the first scrimmage. “I don’t anticipate us dramatically changing the reps right now.”…
