‘Looks like mold’ Knoxville woman finds growth behind wall during apartment repairs

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A maintenance crew replaced a wall inside a Knoxville woman’s apartment recently, and she said they found more than expected.

Issues with moisture and mold were reported in Tamika Callahan’s Steeplechase unit two years ago. She showed us the punch list she handed to the management office when she moved in April 2023. Callahan told us that because her health is bad, she was worried about moisture in one of the walls of her home and other issues. It got so bad that she called the city codes department.

A maintenance worker spent a couple of hours in Callahan’s apartment last week painting the linen closet with Kilz, a special primer specifically designed to control moisture. She’s lived in her two-bedroom unit at Steeplechase for more than two years. Maintenance replaced a whole new wall in her front bedroom last week due to a leak from her second-floor bathroom. Callahan was alarmed when she found water dripping earlier this month.

“I had a leak that was coming from the bathroom upstairs to my office, where I had been working. What caught my eye was one day, I turned around and I noticed that my picture frame had water leaking from it. This was filled up. The water seeped down here. When I lifted them off the wall, the water was pouring out,” said Callahan…
