City Council considering ordinance to expand opportunity for patio use agreements

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – If you’ve dined downtown, you may have enjoyed sitting on one of the many outdoor patios along a sidewalk. Now, you could soon be able to enjoy that same feeling in different areas of the city.

City Council is considering an ordinance that would expand the opportunity to apply for a ‘patio use agreement.’ That permit gives permission for businesses along wide sidewalks to create a serving area or patio on the city right-of-way.

As the city code stands now, only businesses in the central business district, like Gay Street and Market Square, can apply for the permit. The ordinance would allow businesses located anywhere in the city to have the opportunity to apply…
