Two red panda cubs born at Zoo Knoxville, set to make public debut soon

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — There are two new red pandas at Zoo Knoxville, marking the first birth at the zoo in nearly five years. The cubs were born on June 3, 2025, and are on the verge of marking their public debut.

The cubs, which do not yet have names, were born to first-time parents: Sisu (mother, 4 years old) and Doofah (father, 7 years old). Visitors may catch a glimpse of the cubs as they begin to explore the outdoor habitat. The zoo explained that red panda cubs tend to stay inside for three months, and it is up to mom when they come out.

“It has been close to five years since the last time red panda cubs were born here, and more than a decade since guests have had the chance to see cubs raised by their mother on exhibit,” said Sarah Glass, Zoo Knoxville’s Curator of Wild Ambassadors. “Sisu has been a fantastic first-time mom. She has remained calm, attentive, and has allowed us to monitor the cubs’ growth and development closely.”

The zoo said both cubs weigh over a kilogram each. They are also showing the early signs of climbing and an interest in bamboo. The zoo added that the brothers may be wobbly as they practice, but their “playful energy and curiosity” are growing. Once the brothers begin to settle into public life, the zoo plans to share more details and possibly announce their names or how they will be named.
