KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Knoxville City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution to award a construction company $1.2 million to build sidewalks and bike lanes along the section of Liberty Street between Sutherland Avenue and Division Street.
This section is a hill, with TCAT at the top and Sutherland at the bottom. In between lies a residential area with no walkability. The roadway is often busy, as it also connects Sutherland Avenue to Middlebrook Pike.

Zoe Scott with Bike Walk Knoxville said pedestrian-friendly infrastructure is essential to preventing a tragedy.
“Specifically on roadways where we see a lot of vehicular traffic or high speed traffic, sidewalks are very important because [they provide] a separated space for pedestrians to be so they’re not having to navigate sharing the road with vehicular traffic,” she said…
