KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With apartment rental costs going up and up in East Tennessee, many people are looking for a bargain, and scammers are taking advantage of this. One of the popular sites scammers place their fake ads is Facebook Marketplace.
Charetta Jones was unaware that scammers can easily lure you in with an attractive listing. The pictures that scammers post on Facebook Marketplace are often hijacked, meaning they’re stolen from legitimate postings by realtors. The scammer may demand payment for an application fee and with it, your personal information. But what catches your attention and hooks you is the cost of the rental; it will be dirt cheap, a figure you can’t pass up.

Jones has been looking for a new place to live. Her current apartment is too expensive. When she found a neat-looking two-bedroom, one-bath house in Knoxville’s Arlington neighborhood, it was perfect. The 90-year-old home had just been refurbished, and everything about it looked new. She found the home on Facebook Marketplace, and it had not yet been rented. The owner told her the cost was right down her alley.
“He said that it was still available and I could rent it for $560 a month,” said Jones. “That’s a good deal. I couldn’t pass up on it because that’s a really good deal, a steal.”…
