Knoxville mayor discusses Chilhowee Park proposal, sales tax referendum

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon joined Bo Williams on Tennessee This Week to discuss several topics including the debate around the Chilhowee Park proposal, the upcoming local option sales tax referendum, and the future of the former police department headquarters site.

A city council vote on a proposal to sell a part of the park to Emerald Youth Foundation has been delayed until Sept. 30 as officials address questions and concerns about the deal. If approved, the nonprofit would a youth sports complex on the site, including multiuse turf fields, outdoor basketball courts, and a 37,000-square-foot indoor facility.

Several public meetings have been held since an initial final vote scheduled for August 19 was delayed. Kincannon said that the proposal underwent two years of public meetings before it was brought to council, but admitted that the public outreach could’ve had a broader scope. She said that when the proposal does go before the council, it will be changed to reflect the community’s input on the project…
