Oak Ridge cleanup crews preparing buildings for demolition on national laboratory site

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management and contractor UCOR are advancing in their demolition projects to transform the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Many facilities on the site were constructed nearly a century ago that supported the development of nuclear energy, nuclear weapons and medical research.

“These facilities are contaminated from their use over the years, some heavily contaminated based on the materials that were used and processed in them,” Eric Olds, Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management manager, said.
