‘Nobody wants to sign up to be a Gold Star mother’ Gold Star mother remembers fallen son

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) —The last Sunday in September is recognized each year as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, a solemn time to honor the families of fallen service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. On Sunday in Knoxville, the Veterans Heritage Site Foundation held a special event to pay tribute to those families.

6 News spent the day with Gold Star mothers, listening to stories and memories of their loved ones, and learning how they’re being remembered. A Gold Star: a symbol of sacrifice no family wishes to receive. Gold Star mother Paula Knauss-Selph is remembering her son Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss.

On National Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, Paula stands not only in memory of her son, but shoulder to shoulder with other mothers and families who have experienced the same loss.“If you’re a mom, dad, brother, a sister, a grandparent, an uncle, an aunt, anyone, I just want to tell you that this is for all of us and that not a day will go by that we won’t remember them. But as we move forward, we seek a legacy for many that will come behind them to keep doing what they love to do. I am so sorry you don’t have your boy or girl with you today. I miss Ryan every day,” added Paula.

Paula, along with other Gold Star mothers, were honored and presented flowers and flags to place in honor of their lost loved one. The Veterans Heritage Site Foundation is hoping to continue to offer comfort and support to the parents and families left behind…
