KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said it will never ask you for money over the phone, but recent scams are doing exactly that under the guise of being law enforcement.
According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are “spoofing” its phone number and impersonating law enforcement in an attempt to con people into sending money by claiming people have missed court, had a warrant, or owed fines. This is a common tactic scammers will use to scare you into acting before you think, and it is getting harder to detect.

“Just protect your personal information. You know it’s yours. It’s your money. It’s your information, and you better protect it,” said Tony Binkley, President of the Better Business Bureau of East Tennessee.
