KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knox Area Rescue Ministries is planning to open a shelter for women and children. Leaders said the number of people experiencing homelessness has increased at a rate they can’t keep up with.
Last fall, KARM opened the Wing, a space with 120 beds for women and two family rooms for single mothers and their children. KARM’s President and CEO, Danita McCartney, said that space has been overcapacity ever since.
“The wing was our pilot project that we embarked on to create a space for women who can come off the sidewalks 24 hours a day. So, that’s what we’ve been doing behind the scenes at our main campus for about a year. All the while knowing that we had to set our sights on something larger,” McCartney said…
