KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A 19-year-old is facing charges after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run on Wednesday in Knoxville.
Antwane Hartsell was taken into custody after an investigation by the Knoxville Police Department into a hit-and-run near the intersection of Heiskell Avenue and Minnesota Avenue. He has been charged with aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident.
Oak Ridge’s ‘Lady in the Lake’ a step closer to being identified
KPD said officers responded to the intersection just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The investigation found that a 37-year-old man was struck by a speeding car while attempting to cross Minnesota Avenue. The car left the scene. The victim was taken to UT Medical Center, and court records added that he had a traumatic head injury. KPD said investigators were able to identify the suspect vehicle using surveillance video.
Officers then used license-plate reader (LPR) cameras to find the vehicle and responded to the address where the car was registered. At the address, officers learned Hartsell was driving the vehicle and heading to Oak Ridge. They contacted the Oak Ridge Police Department, who were able to locate and detain Hartsell. KPD officers went to Oak Ridge, where they examined the vehicle, finding it had “damage indicating that it was involved in the crash.”
