Police respond after shot fired at Mechanicsville resident who interrupted home break-in

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Knoxville Police responded to Mechanicsville after a home break-in ended with suspects fleeing the scene and a gunshot being fired toward a resident who lived in the area Thursday night.

According to police, officers responded to the home in the area of Dunbar Street and University Avenue after they received a report of gunshots being fired around 9:35 p.m.

Woman dead, suspect arrested after East Knoxville shooting

When Knoxville Police officers arrived, they learned that a woman who lived in the area had heard a break-in at a home on University Avenue. When the woman went to check on the noise, police said she saw three young men inside the home.

The department reported that the three ran from the scene and the woman chased after them, at which point one of the men fired a single gunshot at her. The woman was not struck by the gunfire, but the bullet did strike a pillar and the front door of a University Avenue apartment.
