Retired UT mascot Smokey X diagnosed with cancer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The University of Tennessee’s retired mascot, Smokey X, has been diagnosed with kidney cancer.

The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture announced the 14-year-old bluetick coonhound’s diagnosis on Wednesday. During Smokey X‘s recent biannual appointment, veterinary staff discovered a small mass on his kidney. Diagnostic sampling of the mass determined the mass was a renal carcinoma.

Even during his CT scan, the institute shared that Smokey X demonstrated his unwavering loyalty to the Vols.

“As he emerged from anesthesia to the notes of ‘Rocky Top,’ Smokey rose to his feet, a testament to his indomitable spirit and love for the Volunteers,” according to a statement from the UT Institute of Agriculture…
