Knoxville police Lt. Gordon Gwathney died after his kayak tipped on hunting trip

Knoxville police Lt. Gordon Gwathney was trying to retrieve a bird that had been shot in choppy waters when his kayak flipped over, leading to his death on a hunting trip. His body was found sometime later.

Gwathney, or “Officer G.” as he was known, was 57. He drowned at about 9 a.m. Oct. 26 in a wetland near the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge, according to the incident report from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

Gwathney had a life jacket in the kayak, the report says, but he was not wearing it…
