Maryville restaurant turns rude social media comments into food for those in need

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Waterfront Bar and Grill is one of several Blount County restaurants offering free meals to people who use SNAP benefits during the government shutdown.

On Monday, the restaurant provided meals like chili and cornbread to about 50 families in the area, giving people a chance to get their food before they opened the doors to business for the day. Owner Matt Roberts posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page about the giveaway, and again once the meals had all been picked up.

Then the Facebook comments came rolling in. Many of them were positive, but Roberts said some were negative, too. Those comments left him disheartened, but determined to help other people even more…
