Knox Area Rescue Ministries expands severe weather response with new ‘Red Flag’ policy

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — When temperatures get dangerously hot or cold, Knox Area Rescue Ministries puts out a white flag, but the organization is now adding a new flag for when inclement weather escalates from dangerous to life-threatening.

Previously, KARM has been known for its white flag policy. The flag lets those outside during severe weather and without a place to go know that they can come into the shelter, even if they missed curfew that night.

On Monday, the organization announced it would be adding a “Red Flag” response that provides a structured and compassionate plan of action for when weather conditions become life-threatening.

“KARM’s priority is the well-being and safety of our guests and homeless neighbors,” said Danita McCartney, President and CEO of KARM. “While inclement weather is addressed through the White Flag process, certain situations may present a more severe and immediate threat to life. Having the Red Flag policy in place for the severe weather forecasted, I’m confident we’ll provide a safe refuge for those reaching out for shelter.”…
