Knoxville surgeon is the first to offer minimally-invasive spine surgery in East Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Knoxville surgeon is the first person in East Tennessee to offer a type of spine surgery that is minimally-invasive, according to a release from the Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic.

They said Dr. Benjamin Weisenthal has done more than two-dozen of these endoscopic spine surgeries as outpatient procedures so far, and they have yielded good results.

“A traditional discectomy can require an incision of two to four centimeters, but using an endoscope and tiny camera, I can reduce that to one centimeter or about the size of your finger,” Weisenthal said. “Decreasing the size of the incision means lower risk of muscle trauma or scar tissue formation and can result in less discomfort and a faster recovery.”…
