Pilot program offering free bus rides in Downtown Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Following the approval of a zero-fare pilot program, Knoxville Area Transit will soon offer free bus rides around the downtown area.

The program on Route 1, the Downtown Connector, was one of several proposals approved by the Knoxville Transportation Authority (KTA) on Thursday. Another proposal approved involved temporary changes involving five bus routes as KAT hires more bus operators. The changes were recommended after KAT gathered public input from customers and community partners.

Morristown intersection to close while roundabout installed

Starting Nov. 23, KAT will give free rides on Route 1: The Downtown Connector with help from Visit Knoxville. This route connects destinations in downtown Knoxville, including the Old City, Market Square, Gay Street, Main Street and Depot Avenue. KAT explained that the pilot program begins ahead of holiday events kicking off downtown, including Christmas in the City and the Smokies Winter Wonderland Light Show at Covenant Health Park. It also follows requests for enhanced downtown mobility.
