Crews to collect core samples at Chilhowee Park for study to address flooding

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Crews plan to collect core samples at Chilhowee Park this week as part of a study meant to address flooding, the city of Knoxville said Sunday.

In July, Knoxville councilmembers approved phase two of a hydrology study on Loves Creek to address flooding of Lake Ottosee at Chilhowee Park and flooding at surrounding properties. This is one of several stormwater infrastructure projects.

“The flooding hampers usage of and investment in a significant portion of Chilhowee Park & Exposition Center,” the city said.

Geosyntec Consultants plans to drill and collect core samples at the park which will remain open, the city said. It added that the viewing of the holiday lights won’t be affected, although it warned visitors to avoid work zones. These zones will be cordoned off for about one week, the city said…
