Tennessee bill challenges rights of undocumented students, Knox County debates response

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — The rights of undocumented students are back in the spotlight. A Tennessee state bill — HB 0793 — would allow local public school districts in the state to refuse the enrollment of K-12 students who can’t prove legal immigration status.

Local organizations held a community vigil prior to the Knox County School Board of Education Meeting on Monday night, advocating for the rights of undocumented students.

“It’s not fair to deny any child an education, so I just wanna make sure that our elected officials know that this is something that we care about and we care about our kids,” Cadence Collins, a Knox County resident, said. “Everyone deserves a free public education.”…
